Methanol as a Hydrogen carrier
Our experience spans the entire hydrogen value chain and a multitude of sources, including methanol, one of the world’s primary hydrogen carriers. XVA Markets brings sector-leading expertise within methanol-to-hydrogen generation technology, and experience leveraging the efficiency of methanol to create cost-effective hydrogen solutions. We believe methanol is among the most efficient and economically viable hydrogen carriers available for the market, with a wide pre-existing global production footprint, and a molecular profile that lends itself towards easy and cost effective cargo movement. Those advantages make methanol a significant area of focus for XVA Markets, and a potentially substantial opportunity for our clients.
XVA Markets works with existing and potential methanol producers – including grey, blue, green, e-methanol, and every shade inbetween – to help turn that feedstock into one of the core building blocks of the emerging hydrogen economy.
Connecting the Dots: Hydrogen, Methanol, & Ammonia
With XVA Markets’ deep background in project development, strategy, finance, and commodities, we’re uniquely positioned to help methanol and e-methanol projects find a foothold within the hydrogen markets. By connecting emerging pockets of hydrogen demand with innovative supply solutions, including the use of methanol and ammonia as more practical hydrogen carriers – we help to deliver hydrogen where it’s needed, as efficiently and cheaply as possible.
An Existing, Cost Effective H2 Solution:
As a gas, hydrogen requires capital-intensive infrastructure for storage and transportation. However in many ways, methanol is effectively tomorrow’s hydrogen, today. It’s an extremely efficient hydrogen carrier, packing more hydrogen in one simple alcohol molecule than can be found in pure hydrogen.
As a liquid at ambient temperatures, methanol can be more easily handled, stored, and transported through existing infrastructure networks – cutting costs and increasing efficiency. Methanol reformers are able to generate hydrogen on-demand at either the point of use or a central location, streamlining the hydrogen logistics chain. Methanol can also be produced from sustainable sources, creating a low carbon energy source.
From a chemical perspective, methanol actually carries more hydrogen in this simple alcohol molecule than hydrogen that’s been compressed (350-700 bar) or liquified (-253˚C). Combined with onsite or central reforming into H2, it creates an affordable, efficient, and sustainable fuel, and one that’s easily handled.
