Ammonia as a Hydrogen carrier
Our experience spans the entire hydrogen value chain and a multitude of sources, including ammonia, a primary and prominent hydrogen carrier. Ammonia is among the market’s most efficient and abundant hydrogen carriers, with a wide pre-existing market within the United States, and a molecular profile that lends itself toward more efficient cargo movement. Those advantages make ammonia a significant area of focus of XVA Markets, and a potential opportunity for our clients.
Connecting the Dots: Hydrogen, Methanol, & Ammonia
With XVA Markets’ deep background in project development, strategy, finance, and commodities, we’re uniquely positioned to help ammonia projects find a foothold within the hydrogen markets. By working to connect emerging pockets of hydrogen demand with innovative supply solutions, including the use of methanol and ammonia as more practical hydrogen carriers – we help to deliver hydrogen where it’s needed, as efficiently and cheaply as possible.
An Existing, Cost Effective H2 Solution:
Ammonia is among the world’s most abundant commodities, used in fertilizers and various industrial processes. Pure ammonia contains no carbon, creating only nitrogen and water vapor when fully reformed. Given the viable production pathways for low/zero carbon ammonia, there’s significant global interest in using ammonia as both a stand alone fuel, and as hydrogen carrier.
Like methanol, ammonia can be used for hydrogen storage, and is generally easier and cheaper to handle than high pressure H2 – although the risk profiles differ significantly.
